Another Unexpected Blow for Our Family

Just when it feels like our family has already been carrying more than enough, this late afternoon has brought another sudden and frightening challenge.

While I remain here beside our brave girl Maya at GOSH, Terry at home, working on the lounge flooring in what would become Maya’s bedroom, has unexpectedly become very unwell and is currently in A&E at William Harvey Hospital, where he is receiving treatment on an IV Ceftriaxone drip. He has had an ECG and an X-ray.

Out of nowhere, he developed a severe headache, followed by violent shivers and rigors, a burning hot red face, intense body aches, numbness and pins and needles in his fingers and toes, and some form of central chest pain.

In true Terry style, he didn’t want to make a fuss. He refused to call an ambulance, refused to let me call one for him, and didn’t want his parents taking him to hospital either. But when symptoms come on that suddenly and that severely, you do not take chances — especially when we know just how quickly something serious like Meningitis B or sepsis can escalate.

So between me and his parents, we stood firm and made sure he got to hospital.

Right now, we are doing what we have done through every challenge thrown at our family — holding onto hope, staying strong, and trusting that this too will pass.

It’s hard to put into words how heavy it can feel when life seems determined to test every part of your strength at once… but if this journey has taught us anything, it’s that even in the middle of the storm, love, resilience and stubborn hope carry us through.
